Lighthouses of Trinity House by Jane Wilson
For anyone with an interest in Pharology, Lighthouses of Trinity House is one of the most comprehensive modern books on these guardians of the UK coast.
It covers the history of Trinity House as well as lighthouse construction and equipment. There are a host of engineering drawings in the volume which have not been printed elsewhere as well as superbly reproduced photographs. The text is sufficiently detailed to give a thorough understanding of all aspects of lighthouses without getting overly technical.
Included is an introduction to the one time role the lighthouse keepers. This is based on a series of individual portraits and interviews where Keepers get to speak for themselves all aspects that the job once entailed.
Just over half of the book is then taken up with a more traditional UK coastal tour of the lighthouses. However there is an extensive bibliography for those who wish to expand their knowledge of the subject.
