Sailing Girl Power.

me 1.jpg Saturday, 09 May 09 - 11:49 AM (GMT)
By Mike Taylor in Sailing
Dee Caffari has announced her crew line up for her Round Britain and Ireland record attempt on board Aviva.
Not only are they are all women they are also incredibly delicious females.
Joining the delightful Dee will be Sam Davies who set the present record for an all female crew in Roxy in June 2007.
The other gorgeous British girls in the crew will include offshore sailor Miranda Merron, boat captain Alex Sizer and freelance journalist Johanna Payton.
And they will be joined by the German Figaro sailor Isabelle Joschke.
They will be setting out some time in June, the exact start date will depend on the weather.
They are hoping for a weather window which will allow them to, not only to break Sam’s all female record but the current outright record, for a monohull of 7 days 4 hours, which was set in May 2004 by ‘Solune’.
Their attempt will take them approximately 2500 nautical miles around the British coastline starting and finishing in Portsmouth.
I wonder if they need a cabin boy?

Hilary Lister’s "Round Britain Dream"

me 1.jpg Wednesday, 06 May 09 - 09:30 AM (GMT)
By Mike Taylor in Sailing
I have just been reminded thanks to YachtPals.com that Hilary Lister the quadriplegic sailor is planning to renew her round Britain solo sail attempt this year.
Hilary was forced to postpone her sail last year due to the atrocious weather conditions.
But she is determined that this year she will become the 1st disabled woman to around Britain.
Hilary is preparing to begin her round Britain dream starting from Plymouth in May this year.
Her "Round Britain Dream" is looking to attract sponsors for the completion of this record breaking attempt.
And the call is out for any volunteers who can spare some time to help with her project.
You can offer your support and follow Hilary and her sail at hilarylister.com.

The sinking of the ‘Princess TaiPing’.

me 1.jpg Monday, 27 April 09 - 05:11 PM (GMT)
By Mike Taylor in Sailing
On Sunday the ‘Princess TaiPing’, a replica Ming dynasty Chinese junk sank after a collision with a Liberian registered freighter.

The ‘Princess TaiPing’, was just one day short of completing a passage which had taken her across the Pacific and back.

Her voyage was an attempt to help verify the theory that Chines war junks under admiral Zheng had circumnavigated the globe before Europeans.

Fortunately the crew were recued from the partially submerged vessel by police and coastguards.

Taming the Shrew

me 1.jpg Tuesday, 21 April 09 - 08:36 AM (GMT)
By Mike Taylor in Sailing
It was a beautiful day down at the moorings on Saturday.

The sun was shining, a force 4 gusting 5 blowing, a perfect day for a sail.

But there I was hanging upside down with my fingers up that f’ing bitch Gerty’s back end.

Fiddling about trying to fined that illusive spot.

Gerty is Mignonne’s diesel engine by the way and the spot I was after way whatever was restricting the throttle linkages.

I like to think that I don’t need the engine, that I am agle to manage Mignonne under sail alone.
However, we have a 14 meter tidal range here on the Severn Estuary, which makes for fun and interesting sailing.

Fun if you time it right.

Interesting if you get it wrong.

Which is when the engine comes in as a stand by.

Anyway there I was upside down feeling around, I couldn’t get my head down far enough to look.

Eureka, eventually my fingers got to the heart of the matter (which my ex. would probably regard as a first).

As per usual getting to the heart of the problem meant removing half a dozen other bits.

Eventually I did fix it but before putting everything back I took my cranking battery ashore to put it on charge overnight.

Back on board I put everything back where I think it came from and didn’t have any bits left over.

By that time it was late and I was hungry so, washed the worst of the grease of my hands had something to eat and a glass of plonk then into my bunk.

Sunday morning bright early sun just peeping through the dawn mist after some lethally strong coffee I went ashore for the battery.

Battery connected up pressed the starter.

Nothing!

Ah I’d knocked a wiring connection off.

Try again.
She started!

Running fine again!

No longer the f’ing bitch, but lovely Gerty.

Good old Gerty!!!

‘Robin Knox-Johnston Day On The Web’

me 1.jpg Friday, 10 April 09 - 11:15 AM (GMT)

Sir Robin with Pete Goss Southampton Boat Show 2008
Robin Knox-Johnston is one of sailings greatest ambassadors.
On the22nd April 1969, Robin Knox-Johnston at the age of 30 became the first person to sail alone without stopping around the world.
In 2006/ 2007 aged 67 he again competed in another solo round the world race the Velux 5 Oceans.
This time sailing in an ‘open 60’, a high-tec modern formula one racing machine, a far cry from his 32ft home built wooden Suhaili which, he and two pals built from a design by William Atkins.
Suhaili at Southampton Boat Show 2008Among Sir Robin’s innumerable contributions to the world of sailing, is his involvement with Clipper Ventures which, he set up in 1996 with William Ward.
Now aged a very young and fit 70 Sir Robin is still sailing and encouraging others to achieve their potential.
In this age of posturing celebs and grubby politicians he should be held up as a role model for everyone, young and old, sailors and non-sailor.
April 22nd will be the 40th anniversary of his completion of the first non-stop, solo circumnavigation.
To celebrate please join Adam Turinas to make April 22nd ‘Robin Knox-Johnston Day On The Web’

Sailors Make Better Lovers according to the latest study.

me 1.jpg Wednesday, 01 April 09 - 09:51 AM (GMT)
By Mike Taylor in Sailing
Results from a study conducted by the Onzin Institute in Amsterdam were published this week, and some say the conclusions may send many out to sea. The findings from the four-year study, published in English with the rather boring title: "Environmental Effects on the Virility Index", astounded even the program's Director, Dr. Hijgen Krachtig.
